You may be PERCEIVING pressure to participate in all these activities. Realistically, you shouldn't be expected to dole out for every occasion, especially in a large way. I'd give no more than 5 dollars towards gift cards or with a group for teachers and staff you don't know very well. If an envelope comes around for donations, put in a dollar if you feel strapped, or nothing. If you are feeling the pinch, your colleagues probably are too. Maybe they need someone to step up and delicately decline to so much shaking down. It sounds like this custom has just gotten out of control at your school.
