I agree with the poster wholeheartedly. We had gotten into this "grade level" gift for every shower and wedding that came along, plus a $45 contribution at the beginning of the year for a social fund. Finally, a colleague

spoke out, and we now have an envelope for these types of gifts. A person can give as much or as little (or nothing) and because the card comes from the staff, no one has to sign a name or volunteer what their "contribution" was. Sometimes, our showers are part of a faculty meeting, but the last one wasn't. I had things to do and was not especially close to the teachers it was for, so I

slipped out. I also wish these things were held off-site at someone's home so that it wouldn't feel as obligatory to be there. It definitely gets very expensive, and not every colleague is a social friend.
