In one school that I worked in, a fifth grade student had only been allowed to recess ONCE prior to spring break. Seems she talked too much. I feel this is child abuse! Obviously this form of "redirection" was not working. Perhaps this child talked excessively in class because she wasn't allowed peer contact during recess or lunch (students were not allowed to talk at lunch). Lunchroom monitors stood by tables to issue "pink slips" to talkers, who were then punished by their homeroom teachers. K-5 children!

I agree with Mr. Q. and everyone else in favor of giving kids some time to just be kids. Recess is important to normal development of a child, physically, emotionally, spiritually.
