testing ethics
By Miss C

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a young lady who has really struggled with math this year. No matter how hard she and I both try, she just doesn't seem to get it. We recently covered a chapter that she really does understand, and I'm really excited
for her. However, she has very little confidence in her math abilities now, and is very unsure of herself. She also takes a very long time to do simple operations. We're checking on possible ADD. Anyway, here's my question: When she stays in from specials, after school, etc. to work on the test (because it takes her so long), I've been allowing her to ask me questions about the
test. She almost always knows the correct formulas and such (calculating percentages, etc.), but seems to need an extra boost of confidence. When she doesn't know the right way to work something, I ask questions like, "What's the part in this situation? What's the whole? Good! Now look at this side. What's the part? What's the whole?" etc., etc. Anyway, I'm not sure about the ethics of all this. It seems to be helping her confidence level, which will be very helpful when we start SAT's in a few weeks. But I'm concerned about the ethics of it. I usually don't allow questions during tests. Opinions?
