taking away recess
By kirsten

Clip to ScrapBook
I had an issue with this policy when my son was in first grade. He never got recess until April and I never knew it until he said Mommy I got to play outside with the other kids today for the first time. I was livid. When
I spoke to the teacher she told me he never made it to recess because his work was not finished. I asked if it was not finished because he was goofing off. She said no, he didn't goof off at all. He worked very hard but he was slower than the other kids. So I asked her to please not punish him for being slower than the other kids. She said she didn't do it to punish him. I said,
be that as it may, he sure feels punished. If he has more work than he can finish in the alloted time and you feel it's important that he gets every single worksheet done, then send it home as extra homework, that's fine, but he wants time to play with his classmates too. If he's goofing off, that's another matter entirely - then of course, take his recess away, but don't punish him for being who he is. He can't change that.
