My kiddos (second grade) get 15 minutes of recess. We're encouraged to NOT take away the whole time, but we can if necessary. My homework policy is that you can miss 3 assignments penalty free. After that, you owe me 5 minutes of recess per missing assignment. It works..they get the extra practice with their homework, and can still miss 3 assignments per quarter.

Also, I use the "card system" for classroom management, one warning, then a yellow card, if you repeat the offense, your card is going to red and you owe me 5 minutes of recess.

I do not have to keep my kids in. If its outside recess, they sit on the curb while everyone else plays. If its inside, they keep their head down for 5 minutes. It's very effective with my kiddos.
