recess By Tounces

I don't take away recess for punishment. My administration came into all the rooms last week and announced THEY will take away recess if their bad behavior at recess doesn't improve. (this is against our contract, and this is how they "told" us) They hired recess monitors and gave them no training. When one of them calls in sick, we the teachers have to have recess duty. Every time I've been outside for duty, there have been no problems with behavior because I give them structured activities to engage in.
Its a rotating schedule for us. The problem is this is our planning time. The district made sure | | we would have it this year and gave the schools money to hire recess monitors. When the techers have recess duty, I think we should be paid extra. Then to top it all off, we don't have time to prepare our lessons. I don't personally believe in taking away recess because it doesn't work. The students need this time to excercise and get fresh air. They need to have a plan like Peaceful Playgrounds or something in place.
I do take away recess for GOOD behavior. Every Friday I have Fun Friday. They get treats and play board games inside in my room. They also get medals to wear the following week to be recognized for good behavior. I think we need to think up more positive than negative consequences. I try to focus on those kids who are doing what is expected of them and being good over my few trouble makers. They love attention-even negative. So I don't give them the satisfaction. I think they want to come in for recess because of the attention-even if I ignored them everybody would know they stayed inside.
