i take away recess because it works.


i know that taking away recess is also punishing myself....i don't do it for extended periods--we have lunch for 45 minutes--20 for recess; 25 for lunch; then we have a 15 minute recess. if i have to consequate behavior, i usually use the 15 minute recess; sometimes they lose both--this is for extreme circumstances like continued bad behavior or disrespect to a sub. they remember this and make better choices next time.

another way i consequate bad behavior is sending my students to our Buddy Class (a first grade room) to do their work for a period of time--they don't like it much....oh! that works too. (the first graders are sent to our room to learn how to behave as well--works pretty well!)
