I completed my master's thesis on the effects of music in the classroom. With the right music, it can be positive. I would definitely stay away from any lyrics and if it is distracting children, it should not be played. I use it occasionally now. Most of the time I am too busy to even think about it. I can't believe that other teachers would play rap or rock music in their classrooms. As a parent, I would be upset about that.
