I agree--for kids in poor and/or violent neighborhoods consistent classroom routines and firm but fair discipline procedures help a lot.

Helping individual students grow depends on what support and means you have for assessment. As quick as you can, assess what they know and proceed from there. For one kid, getting her to write her name would be a challenge. For another, it may be using pictures as clues to help make reading make sense.

What's frustrating is that I'm assuming your class will take the SAT9 at the end of the year. If they are very behind already, this may be hard for them. Try to build their confidence as a learner and this will help.
