I believe that if a student finds the book offensive, she should put it back and get another one. I've never had a parent complain about a book--I live in a pretty liberal city though. For Read Alouds, I'm careful what I read--even if I pick a news story to share because I have to think of the 6th graders. We were just told that district policy said that we're not allowed to have books in our classroom library we haven't read. I just inherited a large library when I took over my job and haven't read many of the books, so I guess I'll ignore that policy for a while.
