Reading groups
By Patti

Clip to ScrapBook
I am entering my 5th year in 1st grade. Before I begin my reading groups each day, I pass out a "seatwork folder". Inside are worksheets covering math, language, phonics, and handwriting. I also include some fun activities
such as word searches(they always love these), a color page etc. These folders do not take much time to prepare. There are some children who rush through and finish early. For these children, provided their work has been done neatly, have other things they can do. They can go to the class library and get a book to read, they can get a holey card (math facts) or do other similar activities.
There is little movement allowed throughout the room as this can be distracting for the children in reading groups. I pick up the folders in the afternoon. If someone has not done enough of their work, there is a consequence. I NEVER have outisde help such as parent volunteers. Hope this helps you.
