I don't know what age group you are looking for, but the best "new" book I've read in the last year was The Tale of Despereaux. The author is Kate DiCamillo (I think that's it - she wrote Winn-Dixie). It's about a mouse who falls in love with a princess and a rat who is fascinated by light. Great fantasy and I'm not really into fantasy or animal stories. This one hooked me though! I read it over the summer and made it my 1st read aloud of the year for my 4th graders. It's a chapter book.
