There are alot of free theme units and worksheets online on Bugs, Insects, Butterflies, Lady bugs etc. you might check them out. There are also Ladybug and Butterfly kits available to hatch out these critters in class. You could also enjoy some good books...there are alot out there like:CHARLIE THE CATERPILLAR by Don Delouise, How to Eat Fried Worms, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Loney Firefly, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Busy Spider..Eric Carle. There are millions of good ones out there on first grade level. Many of them have theme units to go with them and correlations to Math..Check out the books that Correlate math and Literature. Check out your local library and your school library and look in AIMS books...maybe PRIMARILY CRITTERS. There are lots of classroom decorations using butterflies and ladybugs..you could also stretch a little and add frogs by doing "Life Around The Pond" as a theme and then you could add fish, birds, wildlife and plants during the year. Look at your states' curriculum and see what works best to help you teach what you are required to cover.
