First Grade - pencil sharpeners
By Sharon D. W-L

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi. I have a great Bosten one at home and one at school with the 3 size holes. I got it through Scholastic with my coupns both times. :) I do not let the students use it. I have about 90 plus prinitng pencils sharpened
and at the end of the day a helper collects the ones we used and puts them in my sad face can. Another helper uses the happy can and puts 6 sharp pencils in each tool basket. I hate, hate, hate dull pencils! :( They make for porr printing and messy work. After school I usally take a few minutes and sharpen them myself and refill the happy can. Because I have so many sharp at once
I can go a day or two without sharpening but then I'm up to my eyeballs having to sharpen... It's just simpler to do a a little each day.

As for the coloured pencils I am having trouble with the little metal on metal hand held with the plastic shaving container. The sharpener itself is fine, good quality but this year the students keep breaking off the sharpner from the shaving container... And it is not on purpose from what I can tell. I have bought two more to try. They cost about 3-4 dollars each. We have gone through about 4-5 this year so far... I got an XACTO electric sharpener fro Christmas and thought the kids could use this one for their coloured pencils. I tried to sharpen about 6-8 coloured pencils today and it has a lead stuck in it and I couldn't get it out... I don't have the time to fiddle with this so I plan to stick with the hand held ones for now.

My father teaches high school science and he gets the little plastic ones at the dollar store and has 1 or 2 out for the students to come and use and he just replaces these each month or so. He is in a newer school but no one has put up the classroom's pencil sharpner yet... It's been 2-3 years. He has come to prefer these over the noise. :)
