friendly letters

I'm a relatively new teacher, and I may not have enough experience to advocate this yet, but I think spending so many times on writing friendly letters is a waste. I taught this to my 3rd graders, and they were all saying that they would never write a letter this way because they send emails. Then I thought about it, and they were right. I have never written a friendly letter the "formal" way, except in school.
