Numbers do the trick By newoldteacher

I assign each student a number (1-22) at the beginning of the year. I found cheap foam circles, about the size of a fifty-cents piece, wrote on number on each circle, and put them in a clear plastic box (that paper clips had been in). When I need a group, or an answer, I simply "pull a number". My kids know it's fair and random. :)

Numbers are great for a quick "head count", too. All I do is call for a roll call and number one begins the count.
