My own peanut allergy...
By PEPteach

Clip to ScrapBook
I think I can understand both sides. I have a severe peanut allergy myself...and have banned peanuts entirely from my own classroom, simply because I cannot be around them at all. My students all know, and are always on
the peanut lookout for me. I think they find it entertaining. ;-) I have a feeling that the mom of the child might be making a big deal out of this so you take it seriously. So many people don't take allergies seriously. I know my own mom growing up would always lecture teachers...not because my allergy was uncontrollable, but more that the teachers really needed to take it seriously
and understand it well.

Ask the mom what precautions she takes at home and take those same precautions in your classroom. I'm sure the mom doesn't ban every egg product at home...ask her how she handles meals and snacks, and handle them that same way. I'm sure you can handle it. I would let the student talk about it to the class, if he is comfortable with it. I know I always felt weirder if the teacher just sent me out of the room when there were peanuts and no one knew why.
