poverty
By MrsM

Clip to ScrapBook
Working with students from poverty is very different than working with suburban, high-performing children. I suggest you read everything you can by Ruby K. Payne, especially her book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty.
My school district is studying this book in study groups, and it has already helped immensely. I work with Title I students, and probably 2/3 of the kids are there because of poverty, only 1/3 due to developmental issues or lack of explicit teaching. With the information in the book (and find the articles on the internet as well) you will better understand your students and know how to
help them understand and help motivate them. You'll also know what not to say, because often we might think to say something that will discredit or insult their whole way of life.
