This is such a great site! The other teachers have super ideas. I also have 2 pencil boxes on my desk. The students get 2 pencils at the beginning of the day. If both pencils break during the day, they can trade them for
2 new ones. If a student is found to break the lead on purpose(and these little darlings do!) then they are allowed only one more pencil. If it breaks, they have to finish the day writing with a crayon. They don't like this, so this usually works. I have a "helper" pick up all of the pencils at the end of the day. Either I will sharpen them or I get one of "My" kids to do it after school.
During reading groups, I allow a few kids to go to the bathroom at a time. When I notice they are back, I signal for the others to go. This usually works well. They are allowed water at this time. I also stress recess for this purpose. If someone asks to go to the restroom right after recess, they risk getting a mark on their conduct chart for "not following directions". I love teaching first grade!
