They will be left behind!
By Eydie

Clip to ScrapBook
I too have a large challanging class with different ability levels. I try to do as much small group lerning as I can to meet their needs but in first grade there are some who are not developmentally ready to read. This isn't
going to even matter that the can't read the word " cat" because it was decided in the district that I teach that if they only fail one core subject but have had good attendance, they can pass on to the next grade! How ludicrous is that! I feel sorry for the second grade teachers who get those students who were passed on. Then, if you look to the future they will most likely fail reading
as a second grader but if their attendance is good....they can go on again! I guess what will stop this is the test given in fourth grade that must be passed to continue to fifth grade. By then that child is going to be so far behind they won't be able to catch up. It makes me upset because if the child would have repeated the first grade they most likely could have become an average to strong student. Wonder how many years it will take for whoever came up with this policy to figure out OOOPs!
