Relax.....the world wasn't created in a day
By Gloria

Clip to ScrapBook
First, I know how frustrating it can be to walk into a disaster, I have done it as well. Since copying is a problem, I have a few suggestions...

Make one copy and put in a clear sleeve. Have the kids use erasable
markers to work out the sheets or have them write it on paper.

Get art coloring pages or seek and finds, these can be copied easily and ahead of time.

Math games, have them review already made flash cards, play games with dice +, -, X, /

The dollar stire is a great resource for filling in time stuff

How about a checkers tournament (critical thinking),
you can get these for 1.oo at the dollar store

Making cards for a nursing home for the holidays. Have several words spelled out for them so you do not have to check them for errors.

You can get books and the tape at most libraries. You can also get cheap headsets and cassette players.

The teachers store have several self check cardboard language arts and math cards that the kids put on regular scrap paper and then turn the card over and self check them.

I know that you need the time off at Christmas but spend a day organizing a lot of this. Many things do not need to be graded by you just checked for completion.

If you have better readers/students can the help tutor a student with more needs. Can you name one a teacher's helper so that the kids come to them for simple problems so that you are not inturrupted?

Have them use a telephone book, you 'll need sever copies and have them find page #, phone #, addresses for some people. Have them find the # of people named john smith, mary johnson, etc.

Have them write poetry using their own rhyming words to Roses are red, etc.

Have them use a map and write the state, abbreviation, and capital

Get books about each state and have them do a simple report

Have them read and compare two books by the dame author

Have them read the truth about the three little pigs and complare with the original

Have a few kids read a book round robin and then together make a poster about why others should read it

Get dominos they can play with these for hours

Do you have pattern blocks, let them make a design and then outline them and color them. later, you can talk about geometry and art and how they go together

Have them make a seek and find out of their spelling words and then the next day, give it to someone else to find the words

Get dice and have them rool the dice and answer the question. They can write down what the rolled and turn it in on looseleaf paper
example dice 1 (4) dice 2 (6)
4+6=10
6-4=2
4X6=24

you can also blank out dice with white stickers and make larger numbers.
kids love this. However, get a foam sheet from the dollar or craft store or the dice noise will drive you nuts.

Since winter break is coming up, they could make cards for all specials teachers, secretaries, cafeteria workers, janitors, thanking them for all they do.

I hope an idea or two will help you out.
