open/closed sign
By slooper

Clip to ScrapBook
I actually use an open and closed sign that I wear around my neck. While I am giving instructions, I am closed until I finish. Then I open myself up, but I only allow 6 questions (# of groups) and I close myself off again for about 10 minutes (long enough for students to either ask a group member or figure things out on their own). After the 10 minutes, I open back up.

I was having a tremendous problem with students asking tons of questions after I had already answered them during the instructions. Students would ask the same questions over and over and I was ready to explode. This has worked extremely well. Students are actually thinking about what they ask and are now asking quality questions.
