We selected the Harcourt series. I especially like their on-line learning site. I use it as a center in my classroom. In addition the series seems to be a "balanced literacy" program which encompasses fluency, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, etc.. The story selections are good children's literature. The resource materials are good as well. Draw backs - comprehension tests are very difficult (for 2nd graders). Also, the phonics skills may not necessarily be in the story - at all! But, overall it is a good program I think.
In the past we had used SF and were not impressed with it overall. I can't comment on Houghton Mifflin because while it was an option it was not selceted and I have never used it in the past. Hope this helps.
