What about seasonal activities? Like in the fall some people like to rake the leaves and jump in them. Others like to place a leaf under a sheet of a paper and shade it so the leaf appears on the paper. In winter, there's making snowmen, skiing, sledding, snow boarding, etc. They could highlight the seasons and the traditions, activities, and weather that comes with them. I'm not sure if this will work as some activities and traditions overlap with holidays and sports. I'll keep thinking! I hope your son will enjoy his time in Japan!
