I saw a teacher use a novel approach to this. She made a black line with a traditional first grade line-dot-line at the top, room for a picture, then three or four line-dot-line sets at the bottom. These were printed "landscape" across an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Then she copied and comb bound these as her students' first journals. I liked the idea of a title line at the top, room for a picture, then more writing room on the kind of lines we use for writing practice. I think I'll make up some of these and see how they work. I'll let you know!
