I start using journals at the beginning of the school year! When I read a story I may have them go back to their seat and write about their favorite part. Since at the beginning of the year they don't write much they could just draw a picture and label it or attempt to write a sentence (with a sentence starter of course)! As the year progresses I have a journal topic on the board twice a week and they have to write and illustrate first thing in the morning. This also gives me a few minutes to get myself together in the morning.
