retakes

I teach fifth grade and I have given retakes in the past. It all depends on the situation. If the entire class bombs, then I have to assume that part of the blame lies with me. So, I will reteach, and then retest. Usually when I do, I will average the two grades. So much emphasis today is placed on standardized testing that I think we have gotten away from teaching for mastery. I like the idea of making sure my kids have mastered a concept before moving on...even though it it doesn't always work that way!
