Clip to ScrapBook
To tie in with classifying I would do I question sort over something you have just read, maybe even telling the students the questions they come up with could appear on an upcoming test. I just did this with some third graders
and at first it was really hard for them but then once we got going they really got into it. Each of my students (I have a pull out group of Title I students so it was a small group) had two question words: who, why, where, how, what, when. You could add more challenging questions that relate to inference or other comprehension skills such as what if..., how do you think so and
so felt...how is the main character in this story like (different) from.... The list is endless. You could divide the class into groups and tell them they have to come up with two questions that fit into their category. Write the question on one side of the index card and the answer on the other side. We didn't write the answers but just discussed them. They realized that some of the questions were inferred. It was a good learning experience for them and it showed me a different way to assess comprehension.
