The Laura Ingalls Wilder series is good to read a chapter a day. This year I read Little House on Rocky Ridge by Roger Lea MacBride. It is the first in the Rose series. My kids loved it. The librarian at our local library told me that my kids had been in this summer asking for these books. I haven't read all in this series and I think some may be too advanced for first graders, but this particular one is wonderful. I highly recommend all the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. After reading Little House on Rocky Ridge, we had pioneer day and the kids dressed up like pioneers and they were so cute. Our school librarian dressed up too, and she read a pioneer story to the class. I plan to do this again. Also, I read after lunch. Like another poster stated, this is good down time. I chose a child to sit beside me each day and they could not wait to have a turn at that. Sometimes they would ask if they could read a paragraph to the class, and I let them. I had some really good readers this year though.
