Any Ideas for Literary Character Day?

I have the task of coming up with different characters teachers can dress up as for our Literary Day. Our teachers are rather conservative and morale is not the best. Any simple ideas of costumes teachers can do? Any way to get the teachers to "buy" into the idea so we can make it fun for the children.
