start with basics

First, see if she knows the letter sounds and if not, work on them. I don't work with beginners, but I believe the sequence recommended is hard consonants, then soft consonants, then short vowels. When she knows all her consonants and short vowels, then start on long vowel patterns, one pattern at a time. Use rhyming verse with the same spelling pattern, or have her come up with words that say "ay" in them, and write them down. Let her sort them by spelling pattern and say them in groups. I used to play a game called Racetrack and I used cards with the long vowel patterns on them, but I can't remember how to play it. After long vowels, start on syllables, prefixes, suffixes. I hope this has given you some help.
