Skinny/fat pencils By Kelly

I do not make my students use either the fat or skinny pencils. I let them use what they want. I have found that when 1st graders try to fit their small hands and fingers around that big fat pencil, they have trouble. | I have my students work on handwriting too, but I am the type I want to see what they can do and I do not get too upset with their handwriting as long as I can read it, they can read it and others can read it. I believe that some children just do not have neat handwriting and I feel that teachers can hurt their creativity and willingness to do their work if we always pressure them to do | | it over if it is not neat. What are we teaching them if a student has to write their story over or do their work over just because it is not neat? I do not believe they are learning more by doing it over. This is just my opinion.
