Skinny/fat pencils
By Kelly

Clip to ScrapBook
I do not make my students use either the fat or skinny pencils. I let them use what they want. I have found that when 1st graders try to fit their small hands and fingers around that big fat pencil, they have trouble.
I have my students work on handwriting too, but I am the type I want to see what they can do and I do not get too upset with their handwriting as long as I can read it, they can read it and others can read it. I believe that some children just do not have neat handwriting and I feel that teachers can hurt their creativity and willingness to do their work if we always pressure them to do
it over if it is not neat. What are we teaching them if a student has to write their story over or do their work over just because it is not neat? I do not believe they are learning more by doing it over. This is just my opinion.
