at the beginning of the year, i go over "Newell's Rules". they cover :) center rules: collaborate (help each other before
:) bingo rules: Mrs. Newell will read the clue 2x only; she will read the second time even after someone has called bingo; she will ask if there are any more bingos; no bingos may be called after someone starts giving their answers; no beans left on, in, under desks :) overall rules: no making fun of others' abilities; the more on-task they are, the longer they get to play (i usually give prizes for games, so they really like to play and work to earn more time--but it really helps to cover your expectations at the beginning of the year.) i also have individual white boards (purchased through Lakeshore, i believe---but i know lots of people just have shower board cut) and response boards that i had a parent make YEARS ago (file folders opened and laminated) that students use with overhead pens on. i use this for kids to write answers and hold up--first one up correct is winner--i just did this 2 weeks ago with rounding decimals; i gave a number and the first group with the board up and number correct got the point. those response boards work well, too, if i'm grabbing a small group and taking to a corner of the room to work on a concept and don't want them to dig through desks for paper or their white boards. i've also carried them around to spot-check concepts from student to student. and i do race to the board to work out the problem--i have room for 5 students to do work/write answers on my white board up front.
