pencils
By 1st grade teacher/TX.

Clip to ScrapBook
We always use skinny pencils and crayons and my kids do fine. I've taught kdg. and first grade.
I agree with Cathy, they improve as the year goes on. But I use pencil grips if they are having difficulty. Also, I see
a lot of kids that do not know how to hold their pencil correctly. They will have problems if this is the case. The pencil should be gripped between the thumb and first finger while resting on the middle finger.
I even see adults holding their pencils the wrong way and it drives me crazy! We as teachers, need to be teaching the correct way to hold a writing utensil. Also, kids need
to be sure their hand is resting on the paper or desk. Another thing is that we practice "handwriting" skills (proper formation of letters) almost daily. We did this in kindergarten too. (I am not so picky when they write in their journals.)
