morning starter
By cindy

Clip to ScrapBook
I use to try to come up with all sorts of ideas for the students to do in the morning. A couple of summers ago I took a class from Sharon Taberski (author of ON SOLID GROUND). She suggested having tubs of books out on the
tables that the students could choose to read from. The students come in every morning and read for 20 minutes. They can buddy up, or read with a friend. At first I wondered about the first day of school and trying it, but it really works. I have nameplates at each student's space and as they come in, I ask them to find their names and choose a book to 'read', or look at. This becomes a
habit for the year. I even was able to fit a guided reading group into this time. As the year progresses students are allowed to choose big books, magazines, etc. for their Independent Reading time. It works for me. Good Luck, cindy
