One other way I got the kids to pay attention is that when I went around checking their papers I gave them each my blue pencil to proofread/edit just like editors at major newspapers (well back in the day, they did before computers) also sometimes I even let them wear my green visor to really feel the part. I never correct in red, I prefer using blue all the time it doesn't seem as critical.
