punctuatioon By Valerie

At my school we start descriptive writing in kindergarten. They only have to write two or three sentence (later in the year) and one year we had to turn these in to the principal and she would write nice comments on them| to the children. Several times a week my students would copy a sentence from the board on lined paper and we would always talk about where the period went and the fact that every sentence begins with a capital letter. I looped with my class this past year and taught them again in first grade (I loved this). Again, we worked on handwriting/punctuation. It takes much repetition, but if | | you can get your kinder teachers to start writing practice and discussing capitals and periods, then it is much easier in first grade. I love to teach handwriting and I always stress correct punctuation. I also count off on a spelling test if they use incorrect punctuation. The principal I have now only asks for one writing sample per six weeks usually, but the kids work harder on these knowing that he will be looking at them. If we are writing a story, we edit them, then recopy adding correct punctuation that may have been missed the first time. This really helps too.
