capitals and punctuation

I find my first graders can tell me during DOL where to put the caps. and ending marks. I think they struggle when doing creative writing because they do not really recognize a complete sentence when they are writing. They are usually connecting the sentences with and, and, and , and , and !!!!
I thought next year I would spend more time concetration on recognizing sentences. Do you think this might help?
