buddy activities, first week
By Jessica

Clip to ScrapBook
I will be a first year teacher next year in first grade. A fifth grade teacher who I will be "buddying" with next year suggested this beginning of the year activity.

The student pairs go on an "Alphabet Walk" outdoors.
The first graders look for objects that start with each letter of the alphabet. The fifth graders record those things in a special little book. (This book can be made by stapeling some small pieces of paper together. Before you go outside, the first graders can write the alphabet on their own in the little books.) Maybe when they come back, the students can draw pictures in the book.

Oh-I

just thought of this, when the students come back, the first graders can tally and graph the responses for each letter. The class as a whole might have seen 13 things that start with the letter A. But only 1 thing that started with the letter U. I would graph this with post-it notes.

I haven't done this yet, but it sounds fun. It seems that it will also help the fifth graders understand their "big bro-sis" role in the relationship.
