Our school has a great phonics program for grade 1. We use Sing, Spell, Read and Write. Each student has exercise books and readers. There are 17 readers in all. Each reader concentrates on different sounds, and blends. It has worked really well in our school. Also there is an assessment book that comes with it which assess the children's comprehension of the readers and the sounds or blends used that week. They learn songs to help them learn the sounds and blends. This program is great for ESL students. I teach French children english and you would be surprised at how well they picked up the english language.
