LA Assessment
By Becky

Clip to ScrapBook
Michelle,
Our First Grade Language Arts Assessment consists of several components; a reading assessment, a writing sample, 4 sentence dictiations, and a developmental spelling test. We use the Development Reading Assessment
(DRA) by Joetta Beaver for the reading. Our benchmark for the beginning of First Grade is a level 3, mid-year is a level 6 and the end of the year is a level 18. We score the writing dictation as well as the spelling test. For the writing, each sentence counts for a certain number of sounds. For example, if a sentence has 18 sounds and a child gets 15 of those sounds they would get
a 15/18. The spelling has different stages; pre-communicative, semi-phonetic, phonetic, transitional and conventional. We got this from a book called How Kids Spell or Teaching Kids to Spell by Richard Gentry (I can't remember the eact title of the book).
It's a lot of paper work, but it is a great LA Assessment.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
Becky
