diorama grades
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
Do you have to give a letter grade? Our district has a policy of no letter grades for primary grade students and I agree with it. The students don't understand what goes into getting an A or a C and I wonder if they get
much out of being given one. That said, some things you can look for on your projects:
Did the student follow the steps? Give full points for following all the steps, partial points for following some of them.
Did the student write correct sentences with a capital letter, a period and correct spelling? Again, full points for all the above, partial points if they left something
out.
Can you tell what the diorama is representing? Give full points if you can see the important elements of the habitat such as grasslands, trees, whatever the animal would actually require. Partial points if something vital is missing.
You can give points for neatness. You didn't say if this was a project completed in class or if students worked on it at home. If they worked at home beware of the child whose parent did all or most of the work. His project will look great. And he will have learned a valuable lesson in how to get someone else to do his projects. One way to determine if the work is the student's own is to ask them to describe how they made the project. Every other sentence will start, "Then my Dad..."

Cheers!
