High Frequencies By Jana

Here's a game that my first graders like, I've 'borrowed' it from some teacher out there, it's called BANG! You get a canister of some sort and dump in all of your high frequency words, we have ours printed out and laminated| (with each new set of words you can just continue to add them in.) Some of the cards say 'BANG!' on them. On their turn, a child draws a card, reads the word and uses it in a sentence. if they're correct they keep the card. If they draw a BANG! card they have to put back ALL of their cards. We play during group rotation times so they have about 15 minutes-- the winner is the one with | | the most cards at the end of the game. Variations: this week we read Mercer Mayer's 'There's an Alligator Under my Bed,' so for a twist on BANG, i created a cardboard 'bed' and the word cards were put UNDER the bed. Instead of having cards that said 'BANG,' a few said 'ALLIGATOR!' Same rules applied. Here's another one... It's called 'Word-O.' Pages are made that feature the sight words (maybe 6-9 words per page.) They are blown up in large bold letters and the font is changed to OUTLINE, so that the words can be colored. Directions are given to the kids such as "Color the word BECAUSE red... Color the word THAT blue, etc. Kids are given a chance to find the word visually, then they are also given a word card to see so that they can check their word. These sheets then go home for practice. We usually do one of these at the beginning of the week as we're introducing the new words for our story and word wall.
