Mexico

I start with a KWL chart to find out what they know. I have tons of worksheets that I have accumulated over the years. We work on these a little at a time and save them in a folder to make into a book at the end of the unit.
We
locate Mexico on a map, color the flag, learn Spanish color, numbers and a few other words. I have some worksheets on Aztecs and we learn Aztec math.I found in the Mailbox Magazine for primary level lots of activities. I think it is in March of 1996.The kids can bring in anything they have at home from Mexico and we set up a museum in our classroom. I have collected stuff to share
like a sombero, maraccas, a Mexican flag, a pinata and money.We go on a field trip to the local children's museum which has a Mexico exhibit. To end the unit I have a fiesta which I set up stations and we do crafts and eat Mexican food(tacos, refried beans and vanilla ice cream with cinnamon graham crackers). We make decoractions the day ahead and I decorate the room after they go home. In the morning of the fiesta we answer "olla" when I take attendence. Some of the crafts are "god's eyes", confetti eggs, clay pots, weave baskets,make sarapes, corn husk dolls. I have many parent volunteers that day to man the crafts and food. I play Mexican music. We do the Mexican hat dance. Another thing is I show the old Disney movie "The Three Cabalaros". It's kind of corney and long but I split it up so they don't see it on the same day.
