Poetry

Clip to ScrapBook
I have done two acrostic poems with my first graders. I found that it works best to first brainstorm words for each letter. List all the words on the board, or on a sheet of paper which the students can use. For example,
for "friend", list a bunch of letters that begin with /f/ that the students can choose from. Then the next day, the students would complete the first two letters of the poem. I have my students write a sentence for each letter. For /f/, a student could write, "flying kites together." The following day we would work on two more letters, and continue until all the letters are completed.
My class would get overwhelmed if I did this all in one day. Last, the students make a final copy, and I have them mount it on contruction paper that has been sponge painted, just to make it look nice. Hope this helps. It's really fun to see what first-graders come up with.
