vowel chart
By patty

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi! I have been teaching first grade many years now. what works for me is the following:
I introduce the short vowels one at a time, do one a week (or two depending on the speed of achievement) I make sure they know the
reason for the short vowel sound.
I then introduce the long vowel sounds, one a week. As I introduce the long vowel of the week, I make a poster of the possible combinations that that vowel has for that sound: then I make a list of words (dolche)(other) that they have had and put them under the list, the list grows as the kids find words with that pattern. My chart for Aa looks like
this: (I have no idea if this will come out as I type it, when you receive it as email! : ) a-e; ai; ay; (the patterns go vertically) When the kids know these patterns, they automatically look for the pattern when they try to spell words in their writing.

Good luck. let me know what other ideas you get! I teach short vowels, long vowels, blends, contractions, in this order.
