Thanks, Jana, for the quick reply! I, too, like to see the progress the children are making throughout the year, so the journal is a great way to do that. I like the idea of the squiggle. I would love to know how your students respond to it.

In Ohio we are so proficiency test driven that it is real difficult to do some of the things that I really enjoy and I know are developmentally appropriate. We are constantly being reminded about the test! It becomes frustrating sometimes.

Do you always give your first graders a prompt from which to write or do they sometimes have a choice of topic?
