K in the U.S.
By Sandy

Clip to ScrapBook
Most kindergartners in public schools in California are required by law to be 5 years old by Dec. 1st. I teach in a small private school and am in the second year of a new kindergarten program for us. It is a 2-year program and we take kids who will be 4 years old by Dec. and keep them in kindergarten for 2 years. We have a separate curriculum for each group in phonics and math. Other subjects, social studies, art, music, P.E., etc. are shared. They all go 5 days a week, but the 4 year olds have the option of going home at lunch or staying for a full day. I have a small group, six 5's and seven 4's. Two of my 4's leave early three days during the week. It seems to work well for everyone.
