Columbus Day Activity
By Nicole

Clip to ScrapBook
I know Columbus Day passed, but maybe you can use this next year.
I like to do this activity with my kindergarten students for Columbus Day. I first read them the book, "In 1492." We then discuss the book and I show
them the route Columbyus took on the globe. I then let the children make their own boats out of Ivory Soap. Ivory soap is soft and the children can dig in it themselves and it floats.
(NOTE: ACTIVITY CAN BE MESSY)
I give each child a bar of soap and a plastic spoon and I have them dig in the soap to make a boat. I tell them the boat hole should not bigger than the word IVORY.
I tell them not to dig too deep, because it will create a hole through the bottom, I don't know if the boat will float then. When the boat is complete I let them make a sail for their boat. I give them construction paper, scissor, markers, glue and a tooth pick. When the sail is dry the tooth pick easily inserts into the soap. My parents have raved too, saying their children are eager to take a bath that evening!
I hope you like the activity! Happy Sailing!
